Two Types of Hammertoe

Hammertoe is considered to be a foot deformity. It is a fairly common ailment and can be caused by genetic reasons, or by wearing shoes that are too tight. When these types of shoes are frequently worn, the toes can squeeze together, causing the middle joint in the second and third toes to bend down, resembling a hammer. Hammertoe can fall into two categories which are known as flexible or rigid. It is easier to treat flexible hammertoe because the joints are much more pliable, and they can be bent back to their natural place. Conversely, rigid hammertoe is considered to be severe, and surgery may be the only option for permanent straightening. Some of the symptoms that accompany hammertoe can include foot pain, corns that form on top of the toes, and the range of motion may be limited. If you have signs of developing hammertoe, please schedule an appointment with a podiatrist as quickly as possible who can help you with the treatment option that is correct for you.

Hammertoes can be a painful condition to live with. For more information, contact one of our podiatrists of Florida Family Podiatry. Our doctors will answer any of your foot- and ankle-related questions.

Hammertoe

Hammertoe is a foot deformity that occurs due to an imbalance in the muscles, tendons, or ligaments that normally hold the toe straight. It can be caused by the type of shoes you wear, your foot structure, trauma, and certain disease processes.

Symptoms

  • Painful and/or difficult toe movement
  • Swelling
  • Joint stiffness
  • Calluses/Corns
  • Physical deformity

Risk Factors

  • Age – The risk of hammertoe increases with age
  • Sex – Women are more likely to have hammertoe compared to men
  • Toe Length – You are more likely to develop hammertoe if your second toe is longer than your big toe
  • Certain Diseases – Arthritis and diabetes may make you more likely to develop hammertoe

Treatment

If you have hammertoe, you should change into a more comfortable shoe that provides enough room for your toes. Exercises such as picking up marbles may strengthen and stretch your toe muscles. Nevertheless, it is important to seek assistance from a podiatrist in order to determine the severity of your hammertoe and see which treatment option will work best for you.

A Ruptured Achilles Tendon

Achilles tendonitis is a condition that can occur due to tears in the tendon from overuse. A ruptured Achilles tendon is an injury that happens when a sudden strain overwhelms the Achilles tendon. With a rupture, one will feel sudden and intense pain as well as a possible popping noise. Furthermore, there can be burning, swelling, and stiffness in the area. Sometimes it is hard to distinguish whether the Achilles tendon is ruptured, or if the pain is a result of a pulled muscle. However, if the pain is intense and does not go away or if there is greater than average stiffness in the area it is likely a rupture. It may also be a rupture when one does not pass the Thompson test, where the soleus complex is manipulated. This kind of injury does not heal quickly. One needs to rest and participate in physical therapy for proper healing. Because many of these symptoms can overlap with other afflictions, it is a good idea to make an appointment with a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.

Achilles tendon injuries need immediate attention to avoid future complications. If you have any concerns, contact one of our podiatrists of Florida Family Podiatry. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is the Achilles Tendon?

The Achilles tendon is a tendon that connects the lower leg muscles and calf to the heel of the foot. It is the strongest tendon in the human body and is essential for making movement possible. Because this tendon is such an integral part of the body, any injuries to it can create immense difficulties and should immediately be presented to a doctor.

What Are the Symptoms of an Achilles Tendon Injury?

There are various types of injuries that can affect the Achilles tendon. The two most common injuries are Achilles tendinitis and ruptures of the tendon.

Achilles Tendinitis Symptoms

  • Inflammation
  • Dull to severe pain
  • Increased blood flow to the tendon
  • Thickening of the tendon

Rupture Symptoms

  • Extreme pain and swelling in the foot
  • Total immobility

Treatment and Prevention

Achilles tendon injuries are diagnosed by a thorough physical evaluation, which can include an MRI. Treatment involves rest, physical therapy, and in some cases, surgery. However, various preventative measures can be taken to avoid these injuries, such as:

  • Thorough stretching of the tendon before and after exercise
  • Strengthening exercises like calf raises, squats, leg curls, leg extensions, leg raises, lunges, and leg presses

Treatments for Sesamoiditis

A condition known as sesamoiditis occurs when tissues that embed the two tiny sesamoid bones just under the base of the big toe become inflamed. Sesamoiditis is considered to be an overuse injury, caused when pressure is repeatedly put on the ball of the foot, especially when flexing the big toe. As a result, this injury is common among runners, football players, dancers and basketball players. Treatments vary for sesamoiditis, and experts find that a combination of them works best. Included are eliminating the activities that cause the overuse, taking pain medication, and performing certain exercises. Wearing shoes that fit properly is recommended, and wearing high-heels or any shoes that force the weight onto the ball of the foot should be avoided. In some cases, depending on the severity of the sesamoiditis, cortisone injections can be effective in reducing the symptoms of pain, swelling, and difficulty bearing weight. Gel and foam orthotics are often used to reduce the pain. To find out more about treating sesamoiditis, please consult a podiatrist.

Sesamoiditis is an unpleasant foot condition characterized by pain in the balls of the feet. If you think you’re struggling with sesamoiditis, contact one of our podiatrists of Florida Family Podiatry. Our doctors will treat your condition thoroughly and effectively.

Sesamoiditis

Sesamoiditis is a condition of the foot that affects the ball of the foot. It is more common in younger people than it is in older people. It can also occur with people who have begun a new exercise program, since their bodies are adjusting to the new physical regimen. Pain may also be caused by the inflammation of tendons surrounding the bones. It is important to seek treatment in its early stages because if you ignore the pain, this condition can lead to more serious problems such as severe irritation and bone fractures.

Causes of Sesamoiditis

  • Sudden increase in activity
  • Increase in physically strenuous movement without a proper warm up or build up
  • Foot structure: those who have smaller, bonier feet or those with a high arch may be more susceptible

Treatment for sesamoiditis is non-invasive and simple. Doctors may recommend a strict rest period where the patient forgoes most physical activity. This will help give the patient time to heal their feet through limited activity. For serious cases, it is best to speak with your doctor to determine a treatment option that will help your specific needs.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact our offices located in Delray Beach and Boynton Beach, FL. . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

Caregivers and Fall Prevention Practices

There are many people who live in nursing homes or assisted living facilities, and it is important that fall prevention techniques are followed while in these types of environments. It is beneficial for caregivers to know the pain level of their patients, and this can help gauge if help is needed to walk. The risk of falling may be reduced when there is assistance while using the commode or shower, and crutches or other support devices are within reach. Additionally, when the patient's personal belongings are close to them, such as cell phones, glasses, TV remote, or reading materials, the chances of falling to retrieve these items is greatly reduced. The call button and light are essential in being easily accessed, and this may prevent the patient from getting out of bed to find a caregiver. If you would like additional information about how falling can affect the feet, a podiatrist can correctly inform you how this may be avoided with fall prevention techniques.

Preventing falls among the elderly is very important. If you are older and have fallen or fear that you are prone to falling, consult with one of our podiatrists from Florida Family Podiatry. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality advice and care.

Every 11 seconds, an elderly American is being treated in an emergency room for a fall related injury. Falls are the leading cause of head and hip injuries for those 65 and older. Due to decreases in strength, balance, senses, and lack of awareness, elderly persons are very susceptible to falling. Thankfully, there are a number of things older persons can do to prevent falls.

How to Prevent Falls

Some effective methods that older persons can do to prevent falls include:

  • Enrolling in strength and balance exercise program to increase balance and strength
  • Periodically having your sight and hearing checked
  • Discuss any medications you have with a doctor to see if it increases the risk of falling
  • Clearing the house of falling hazards and installing devices like grab bars and railings
  • Utilizing a walker or cane
  • Wearing shoes that provide good support and cushioning
  • Talking to family members about falling and increasing awareness

Falling can be a traumatic and embarrassing experience for elderly persons; this can make them less willing to leave the house, and less willing to talk to someone about their fears of falling. Doing such things, however, will increase the likelihood of tripping or losing one’s balance. Knowing the causes of falling and how to prevent them is the best way to mitigate the risk of serious injury.
